This book is one of my all-time favorite books. I read my father's edition of it in the 1950s and of course, wanted to be an archaeologist! But given my lack of math skills, I ended up being an art historian instead. I bought this paperback edition as a gift to my post-grad museum intern who is working part-time in Europe in archaeology. He was not familiar with the history of the profession.
Ceram, in this book, guides the reader through fascinating archaeological expeditions and discoveries. The reader feels the oppressive heat of the desert or jungle and recoils from the awaiting spiders or snakes as the author leads them to distant excavations alongside the scientists that made amazing discoveries. Come...explore Pompei, Egypt, Babylon, and Chichen Itza! A wonderful book. I wish it were updated; it was written in 1949.
I read this book when it came out and it began my love affair with archaeology. Over 50 yrs ago and I ha e been to some of the sites..rereading this book b t ings back all the mystery to mms a n.a. celeste and adventure t h at my then12yr old self discovered in its pages..when I went to Iraq and visited Babylon in 1980 it was book I thought about
Compelling, riveting. Even though written in 1949. This book would make an excellent documentary drama with multiple episodes devoted to each major discoverer covered in the book
Book was in very good condition, would have been excellent except that the pages are quite yellowed. But for the price, a good book, just not acid-free non-yellowing paper, to be expected for the price.
This is a well-written, accessible introduction to the founding years and incredible sites of early archaelolgy and archaeologists. However, it was written and updated over fifty years ago, so much of the science and theories about these early sites is outdated. Still, an easy and fun read...
Better than any fiction book!!
This book is one of the classic works on the archeological discoveries of the 19th and early 20th centuries. Still a fascinating read some fifty or sixty years after it was first written.
