About the Author

Bruce Alexander is a psychologist and Professor Emeritus at Simon Fraser University, where he has worked since 1970. His primary research interest has been the psychology of addiction. He is best known in the UK for the "Rat Park" experiments, which helped to demonstrate the falsity of the outworn belief that simple exposure to narcotic drugs can cause addiction. In Canada, he has been well known as a critic of the War on Drugs for decades. His most recent work has been on the causes of the current worldwide proliferation of addiction, not only to drugs, but to a great variety of other habits and pursuits. Exploring this topic has required that he venture far beyond his training in psychology, particularly into the fields of history and anthropology.

Many years ago, Gabor Maté’s article “Embraced By The Needle” convinced me that addiction had more to do with emotional trauma than chemical dependence, an insight that eventually drew me to The Globalization of Addiction by Bruce K Alexander. It was strange to read it so soon after Ernest Becker’s The Denial of Death, both of which deal with the mental turmoil resulting from the absence of psychosocial integration, or, the fulfilment of psychological needs on both individual and social levels.According to Alexander, addiction is a coping mechanism for “dislocation,” which can arise from certain disastrous circumstances, such as the colonialist destruction of indigenous cultures, but is a fundamental element of free market economics even at the best of times. For the sake of open markets and higher profit margins, global capitalism demolishes the meaningful social relationships for which addictive tendencies provide an incredibly poor substitute. Dismantling the myths of essentially habit-forming drugs, Alexander explains that addiction more often than not entails no substance whatsoever but a variety of compulsive behaviours and fixations, including gambling, sex, romantic love, money, power, zealotry, video games, and starvation. While preferable to moralistic judgements and the futile War on Drugs, decriminalization, harm reduction, and therapy are therefore insufficient to address the root cause of addiction. By applying his theory of addictive dynamics to religious fanaticism, nationalism, and bureaucratic fervour, Alexander basically explains why good people do bad things.With a broad, multidisciplinary scope, Alexander draws upon an impressive range of sources, from St. Augustine and Socrates to people he knows personally, and the end result is much more human than a dry psychology textbook. His theory effectively renders obsolete the conventional wisdom, with all its false dichotomies, that treats addiction either as a moral failure or a disease. Putting his theories into practice, however, is quite a tall order. While Alexander outlines the problem of addiction in detail and suggests specific strategies for fostering communal integration, his call for the radical restructuring of society, upon which depends not only our mental health but our environment, is rather vague and optimistic. I nonetheless realize that it’s only responsible to hope and try for better ways.

The three stars are for Prof. Alexander's promotion of the "dislocation" approach to addiction, and his understanding that addictive behavior is more than a discrete individual problem. To reduce addiction to one or another of the contending theories is less than helpful, he argues; we haven't after all made much of a dent in controlling addiction, much less eradicating it. "Addiction," he says, "is neither a disease nor a moral failure, but a narrowly focused lifestyle that functions as a meagre substitute for people who desperately lack psychosocial integration." All of the theories of addiction based on the behavioral, social and physical sciences, as well as on theology and metaphysics, are lacking. His broad historical perspective attempts to show that addiction is rapidly globalizing as a result of "poverty of the spirit" (his subtitle) caused by the ""free market society," which "subjects people to unrelenting pressures towards individualism, competition, and rapid change, dislocating them from social life." It is this historical reductionism that prevents me from adding another star or two. Despite his protestations to the contrary, his historicism is based on a vague sort of psycho-marxism that cherry-picks historical examples (as varied as Plato, Augustine, the city of Vancouver, the industrial revolution, James Barrie's Peter Pan, AA and the 12-steps) to come to conclusions that are rather progressive and hopeful but not very convincing. He doesn't understand the fundamental spiritual side of Western Civilization, preferring to "respect" and even "rely" on certain Christian insights while dismissing its truth claims. This "cut-flower" approach to spirituality leaves him with a healthy skepticism of reductionist explanations for addiction, but also with a vague, mostly psychological view of "psychosocial integration." Everyone should learn from his energetic analysis of the dislocation theory; not many will be persuaded that he has explained it very well.

This is one of the books that I recommend to people without reservation.Granted, not a lot of people take me up on it — it's thick, it gets into philosophy, experimental psychology, and sociology — it's a tough sell. But it's one of those books that will lift the scales from your eyes, even if you disagree with its final recommendations. (Like I do.)If you're on the fence, don't be. Read this book.

Penn wrote of the ash tree, which I cherish, but am disheartened to know that the destroying Emerald Ash Borer has now been found in 40 of the 72 counties in our state. A delightful book for anyone with an appreciation for the finer qualities of wood. And well researched, organized, and written.

After the Patriots beat the Falcons I was outraged at the obvious calls made to benefit the Patriots. I was very confident that the refs helped them win. After reading this book and the author's well documented statistics and observations I am absolutely positive that the fix is in more times than one would care to believe. It happens in many sports and is a disgrace. It is a great read and very enlightening.

Watch just about any sport these days, and if you dig deep enough, you will find it being manipulated somewhere along the line. Certain teams are given wide latitude (New England Patriots, anyone?) to seemingly do whatever they want, and nothing seems to ever happen to them as a result. Sports is so rigged, nowadays, you can just about predict on how the games are going to turn out. Everything is about money with team owners, players and lost in this shuffle is the beleagured 'fan', whom gets hosed for ticket prices, and what have you. Sports seems to be a lot worse than it used to be.

Let me start that I am not much into conspiracy theories. However, after reading Brian Tuohy's excellent The Fix Is In, I am not so sure. Tuohy's makes the case that professional sports are too big and make too much money to be left to chance. Sports are just are version of "Bread and Circuses" from Roman times. Ratings are hugely important because that drives revenue. The NBA is probably the biggest culprit. Ever wonder why the Lakers and Celtics (now the Heat) are always in the finals? They get better ratings because they have the "superstars". Wonder why Michael Jordan never got fouls called on him? Wonder why the Knicks won the lottery for Patrick Ewing? That's what the commissioner David Stern wanted. A very good book that will make you think.

This is not conspiracy theory. Sports are an opiate for the mass of humanity that needs to associate itself with hometown heroes. If you begin to pay attention, you will see how structured and manufactured the sports world is. Very few are willing to go there because it would mean the loss of vicarious victory. As we struggle through our lives with mortgages and crappy jobs, it is the sports "heroes" who help us feel better about our dwindling humanity. The sports world can be compared to organized crime as all winners are predicted and everyone plays a part. Some are in on it yet no one knows who.....

If you're looking at this book you have probably realized something fishy is going on with professional sports. They are all big business and as such they are run for profit as entertainment enterprises. This book exposes the manipulation behind professional sports. So far so good as I haven't had time to finish it yet but great so far.

One of the most important books of the past 20 years. It deserves much wider readership -- true investigative reporting, presented matter-of-factly and convincingly. Professional sports is a business, an entertainment, not competition. Some games are real, some are not. Brian Tuohy is an American hero. A must read!

Very informative and thought provoking. Tuohy tells it like it is. Why do strange things happen sometimes in sports? Is it just mere coincidence or is there something more going on behind the scenes that we the public are not privy to? I would probably still be in the NFL's hypnosis had it not been for the 2015 playoffs which featured some odd occurrences indeed. The pickup of the interference flag in the Lions/Cowboys game, the entire Packers/Seahawks contest, and of course the conclusion to the Super Bowl. Pass instead of run with "Beast Mode" in your backfield? Brian Tuohy brings to light the corruptive manipulatory nature of the beast that is professional sports.

I'll admit. I was skeptical when a friend told me about this book. However, after reading it for myself, I have a new look at how sports is played in the US and around the world. The amount of money involved in this industry does not allow for "accidents." Just look at the last labor dispute in the NFL that resulted in replacement officials. After a blown call changed the betting line and went against the spread (if the right call were made, it would have matched the spread), millions of dollars changed hands in the last second of the game. Days afterwards, the strike was over.Many of the events covered in this book, taken by themselves, may not be dramatic enough to convince anyone. But the patterns, the consistency and entire context of years and seasons convinced me that professional sports is a business, not a game. It seems as though professional wrestling and the WWE is just the only sport to honestly acknowledge it publicly.

This is a readable, clear, contextual look at Michelangelo’s life and work. If you want to learn a lot about the guy quickly, this is your best bet.

This books is sooo beautiful. I mean really. It's amazing. It was supposed to be a text book for my class but I love it and now it is going to be a coffee table piece to share with everyone.

This book was suggested for a course I am taking on Michelangelo. It is excellent in the format as to what the lecture series encompasses. I am pleased that I bought the book because it is an excellent reference in the event that I travel again to Italy and visit the museums and churches that have Michelangelo's works.

If you were to read only one text dealing with the great Michelangelo and his art, this would be the book. It is a succinct biography in which one also finds clear and well chosen discussions of the artistic works of the great Florentine. It would be fair to say that Professor Hibbard is a graceful guide to these works--he shows us the key elements of the sculpture, painting and architecture that made Michelangelo the preeminent figure of the Renaissance. And he presents them to us as the artist's life unfolds, so that we can understand the challenges met and problems solved at various stages in Michelangelo's development.The book is filled with a large number of black and white photographs as well as plans and drawings which, together, help the reader understand each of the works being discussed. Indeed, the reader would be hard pressed to find more than a handful of opposing pages that do not have one or more illustrations. For those who are so inclined and long to see more of each work, they are titled so clearly that a quick search on line can bring plenty more to look at. But the illustrations provided in the book are more than sufficient for the reader's understanding.If you are looking for a shocking expose of Michelangelo the man, with all of his secrets revealed (warts and all!), then you do not want to read this book. Professor Hibbard discusses Michelangelo's personality and personal life in detail, but always in the context of his creations. He writes with a deft and gentlemanly reserve that allows the reader to accept the facts without drawing unreasonable conclusions.The conversations about the well-known works - the Pieta, the David, the Sistine Chapel ceiling and Last Judgment - are all clear and helpful. The on and off again relationships with various Medici and Popes provides a helpful understanding of how and why some of the artist's projects were unfinished, or completed in terms altogether different from their conception.The discussions of the architectural contributions of Michelangelo are very good, and provide the reader with an appreciation of the sculptural qualities of these larger than life sculptures. Indeed, Hibbard's discussion of the Bibliotheca Laurenziana stairway and St Peter's are the best sort of architectural criticism to be found anywhere.At the end of the book, but separate from the extensive bibliography, is a section called "Notes for Further Reading", which, if followed, could benefit the reader who wants to know more.If you find this review hepful, why not read some of my other reviews! There is probably no greater art historian in the second half of the 20th century than Howard Hibbard and this book is one of his best. Professor Hibbard, who has also written books on Caravaggio and a study of Poussin turns his attention to Michelanglo. This is not a rehash of The Agony and Ecstasy, Professor Hibbard's interest is in the work and the artist and not a study of the outward events of this great artist's life. I found Professor Hibbord's criticism insightful and interesting. I recommend this to anyone who is interested in the renaissance.

In _Michelangelo_, Hibbard presents a unbiased account of Michelangelo's life in an enjoyable mix of historical narravitve and critical and contextual analysis. The writing is approachable with a minimum of high-brow art jargon. Hibbard also refrains from diving too deep into speculation about fine points such as sexuality and politics. This book is suited for those desiring an end-to-end introduction to the man and his art, or for those who have forgotten 90% of art survey 101, like me.

We all have that one boy we never really get over, even if we never actually got under him - McCoy Graves was mine.'Eastlyn has been deeply, madly, head over heels in love with McCoy since the age of 12. Gillian Jones is a multifaceted author. I’ve had the honor of reading all the books that she’s written throughout her career and I’ve seen her grow by leaps and bounds. Gillian has the ability to hit on hard topics not many authors would dare to touch on, but then, she can easily switch to a lighthearted Romantic Comedy like she did in Love Won.Mr. McCoy Graves and Miss. Eastlyn Hatfield… Boy – Oh – Boy.This book had me from the first sentence – maybe even by the first chapter heading. I laughed more than I’ve laughed in a book in a while. Eastlyn was a hoot and her quirkiness shone from the very beginning. Gillian’s ability at scene description is spot on and because of that, I was able to experience everything that was Eastlyn and McCoy. There are so many spoilers I’d like to explain in detail, but I wouldn’t want to spoil it for anyone. (Cleanup on isle three.)Gillian also introduced two supporting characters, Kami, Eastlyn’s best friend, and Keaton, Eastlyn’s brother. Their interaction and back and forth banter was just as hot as Eastlyn and Coy’s. I can’t wait to read their book. I know the chemistry between those two will be explosive.Personally, this is one of my favorite taboos to read about. The elusive brother’s best friend.Gillian doesn’t just take the reader through the here and now, she takes the reader back and shows them all the reasons why Eastlyn had such a strong love/hate relationship with McCoy. The teasing on McCoy’s end was effortless. Eastlyn made it so easy for him to push her button from the moment they first met. I adored it!I loved how I was able to read the story from both Eastlyn and McCoy’s POV. Being able to experience a couple’s romance for both sides is always a win for me.OHHHH…the diary entrees!! You’re going to love the diary entrees. Ms. Jones embraced the typical teenage girl’s mind in every entry. Those might have been my favorite parts of the book.This is another five-star read for me. I’d read this gem again, and again.Gillian, my dear, you’re the bee’s knees. Keep ‘em coming, lady.

Love Won, the first book in the Winning At Love series, is my favourite type of book - a really good slow burner romance, with some great humour running through the storyline as well. I love the dual POV's being separated into different sections - first up is " She Said " from Eastlyn's POV, followed by Part 2 " He Said ", from McCoy's POV...........and then we have " They Said "! The flashbacks to the past provide many moments of hilarity.Poor Eastlyn! To say she has always liked McCoy is a huge understatement - she has admired him from afar and wanted him for years. YEARS!!! They first meet when McKoy is the new kid in 8th grade, and he becomes fast friends with Eastlyn's brother Keaton - making McKoy a permanent and torturous fixture in Eastlyn's life. Eastlyn is hilarious - she is a walking disaster and her clumsiness throughout the story made me LOL many times. And her mum........she's just a little on the crazy side with her cake for every occasion.The slow burn romance that built throughout this story had me sitting on the edge of my seat waiting to see when the attraction between Eastlyn and McCoy would finally be too much for them to ignore. It was HOT when they finally sort themselves out - and the side story that was happening at the same time between Keaton ( Eastlyn's brother ) and Kami ( her best friend ).........how long til we get that story?? Can't wait to read that one, it's definitely going to be a hot slow burn romance as well.
