Easy to follow and very practical. A great resource especially for budding film makers.

A+

This is a nice book compare to other books. It's very detail but easy to understand. Good for those who want to learn!

As a self taught filmmaker, I rely a lot on articles I find online and YouTube videos to teach me a lot of things. But budgeting and scheduling have so many components that you need a Start to Finish approach that you can't find with random snippets. That is where this book comes in. I highly recommend it. The author covers EVERYTHING and in a way that is easy to understand and quick to reference later. Just check out the Table of Content preview of this book here on Amazon and you will see how in-depth this good goes. You will get a step by step approach as well as great overview information. As a matter of fact, I purchased another one of Ms. Landry's books called "This Business of Film" and this scheduling and budgeting book is a great companion or stand alone resource. This book is for you if you don't want to pay a ton for films school or are tired of wasting valuable time watching YouTube videos that don't give you the complete story. With what I learned in this book, I feel I'm ready to to produce a low budget or a block buster film. Highly recommended.

"Scheduling and Budgeting Your Film" gave me a great education as a WRITER. See, I wrote a great screenplay. Made it to the Second Round at the Austin Film Festival. Then I learned that my wonderful story was just too expensive to produce without a franchise or big money track record behind me. I decided to learn the down and dirty details about filmmaking by reading Landry's book. Now I know (a) that, for sure, my screenplay would be really, really expensive to produce and (b) that I can keep the budgeting and shooting issues in mind to make my next project more attractive to producers. If you are making films, Landry gives you a really clear, often funny, roadmap to avoid making costly mistakes and maximize the dollars you've got. If you are writing films, use what you learn in this book as part of your pitch -- "My story is great AND I made sure you can make the movie efficiently and profitably."

A billion million years ago, I made non-theatrical films for sales training, fundraising and similar purposes. They didn't require much in the way of budgeting, my scale was so small I didn't attract the attention of unions and I learned by doing. I edited on a rented Moviola set up in my bedroom. Today the market for film and video is vastly larger, employing tens of thousands of people and demanding a wide variety of skills, one of them being production management. The authors of this textbook define production management as "[t]he planning, organizing and managing of the resources and actions required to successfully create a film from a concept or script". Though the authors point out that the producer or director in smaller units may be called upon to act as production manager, this book seems more oriented to a person for whom production management is their primary job. The book is clearly intended to be a classroom text, though it will also serve as the foundation for independent study as well. It is excruciatingly thorough, with detailed explanations of every step of the production process. There are helpful Rule Of Thumb tips and even "CYA" pointers intended to help the beginner avoid common pitfalls. There is a huge amount of detail here, much of it fascinating to moviemaker and non-moviemaker alike. Did you know, for example, that "animal actors" are part of the Teamster union, as are the wranglers who handle them? Did you know what the Animal Humane Society rules are? It's unlikely that I will ever produce anything more than short one or two person talking-head videos in the future. Still, this book was a fun read, very informative and I learned quite a bit about production management.Jerry

I got this book with very very little knowledge about films and the inner workings of making a film (I know a lot about movies but not making them), and I will say that it was more than a little overwhelming at first especially because it has a lot of technical jargon in it. I also got this with a much less technical book on film making First-Time Filmmaker F*#^-ups: Navigating the Pitfalls to Making a Great Movie and between those two books, I was able to understand a lot more about the film industry, and making a movie, and the latter book really helped me understand "Scheduling and Budgeting Your Film" better. If you all ready know a decent amount about film, but want to know more about budgeting for one, then its probably not going to be as overwhelming for you to read this one, like it was for me. I can honestly say though, I don't regret getting it or reading it, it really helped me understand just how complex film making can really be, and how important a budget really is for a film (I all ready have a budget in my daily life so that helps too in understanding).I honestly never knew anything about how to break down a script, so the sections on that, to me were very helpful, and I love how the book really just lays out everything, gives you lots of illustrations and pictures from the actual software (if you choose to use it), or what it looks like if you do it by hand. I also never though of color coding my drafts, that would have been really useful to me even when I was writing play scripts, and now that I am writing them again, I find that to be a very useful idea; those were the most helpful sections for me.I also knew absolutely nothing about what really goes in to pre-production or post-production and what constitutes above the line or below the line cost, or the tax breaks that you can get either as a film film maker. It just lays out all of this stuff easily and how each element fits in to the overall filming process.I cannot recommend this book enough to anyone who wants to learn more about how to do a film with as little hassle as possible, it just lays everything out so well, its an indispensable guide i will continue to go back and review again and again as I work on my scripts and start filming my filming.God Bless ~Amy
