About the Author
Maybe it's because he was born in the same hospital as Flannery O'Connor—the old St. Joseph's in downtown Savannah-but there's no doubt that Jim Morekis has writing in his blood. As the longtime editor-in-chief of the weekly newspaper Connect Savannah, the University of Georgia graduate has written about and experienced pretty much every cultural happening in the area. He credits his love of travel to his mother Elizabeth, who was John Berendt's travel agent during his stint in Savannah while writing Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil.Jim currently serves on Savannah's Cultural Affairs Commission, happily spending taxpayer money on the city's many festivals. As for the ongoing debate over which city is better, Charleston or Savannah, Jim calls it a tie: Charleston has better long-term planning, but Savannah has to-go cups (allowing anyone to explore the Historic District with a beer or cocktail in hand).When not busy writing, Jim enjoys spending time with his two beautiful daughters, Alex and Sophia, and his dear wife Sonja, who gets his deepest gratitude for opening his eyes to the true wonder and mystery of the Georgia coast.

We used this book for a quick trip to these two cities, and found it very useful. Be sure to get the the most recent (2016) edition as it includes the most up-to-date information, e.g. about the AME church where the massacre occurred. However, we relied on TripAdvisor also for current info and ratings of restaurants, tours, and the like -- our favorite restaurant (R Kitchen) and tour (Two Sisters Tour) in Charleston weren't in the book, and one restaurant it recommended was closed. The book did us a huge favor in telling us about the town of Beaufort, between Savannah and Charleston, where we had a delightful morning and lunch at a recommended restaurant (Blackstone's Cafe). Overall, it's definitely worth it to have this book in hand if you're visiting these cities!
Very useful. Lots of maps of Charleston/Savannah and surrounding areas. Lots of info about places to eat, things to do & see. In fact, it was so useful that I now know I don't want to vacation there. Pretty much all there is to do in Charleston - visit a slave plantation (not a good experience for some Americans), visit boring Fort Sumter, walk along Battery Row, and eat at some good restaurants - you can do in 2 days. So if you're fine doing all that in the first couples days and then just hanging out on the beaches, go to Charleston. Otherwise, go somewhere else.
