The mission to bomb the Port Stanley runway took a lot more cajones on the part of the aircrews involved than I had ever realized, before reading this highly readable account. The crews of both Vulcan 607 and the long slot Victor are heroes, although that's not to downplay the other tankers involved in the complex air to air refueling that made the mission possible in the first place. Having been a Vulcan ground crew member back in the Cold War days, I am very familiar with the features of the Vulcan's cramped cockpit, so could visualize their discomfort during the many hours the crew spent in there. The later Black Buck 6 anti-radar sortie that had to divert to Rio on the return leg was interesting, not least because the reason given for the diversion is slightly different from that given in "The Vulcan Boys" book. In "Vulcan 607," it was supposed to be a sheared off refueling probe, whereas the "The Vulcan Boys" blames it on the Vulcan's probe causing damage to the tanker's hose drogue basket that not only made the drogue unusable, but also sent splinters of aluminum into the Vulcan's engine intakes, damaging the inlet guide vanes. Both reasons, however, are laid at the feet of the exhausted Vulcan's captain. I wonder what really happened?

This is a good read but there are some things you should know before purchasing this book. If you are wanting to read about the actual raids carried out by the Vulcan bombers then you should start with chapter 31. The first thirty chapters deal with the background including how the Falklands war came to be and all the improvisation that had to be done to get the Vulcan bombers ready to make the raids. Acronyms like SNAFU and FUBAR describe how hard of a task it was to set up the raids. The only thing I can compare it too is what I've read of the Cactus Air Force on Guadalcanal where people did some incredible and trying things to keep our planes in the fight. Kudos to the RAF and everyone who took part in the effort.

This is the true story of the first of the Black Buck raids launched on Port Stanly in the Falkland Islands during the 1982 Falklands War between the UK and Argentina, which the UK won, naturally, against overwhelming odds and outnumbered three to one. The Black Buck raids put the Port Stanley airfield out of use for Argentine fast jets, made them pull all their jets away from the coast, and put the Fear of God into the Argentine military - if on a 7,000 nautical mile (minimum - actually more like 10,000 due to the course flown) round trip between Ascension and Port Stanly, Buenos Ares was in range as well.Peppered with some almost unbelievable, until you remember this is the RAF, anecdotes, this is a must-read. Perfect fodder for a long-haul flight or just relaxing on vacation by the pool.

I ordered this book before Xmas and it got lost in the mail. Jwbasilbooks were great when I contacted them and they offered to immediately send another copy. I was in no rush so I was glad I waited because it eventually did show up. The postmark date showed the correct shipping date so it was definitely a post office problem. 10 stars for jwbasilbooks service!Anyway the book is a great read about an unbelievable story! It covers from just before the Falklands war to just after Vulcan 607s mission. As well as the main story there are interesting highlights on where and how they scavenged parts for this ancient aircraft which was only months away from being retired. The refueling plan alone was amazing! This book has whetted my appetite for more stories on the Falklands War -the logistics involved for fighting such a long distance from England!

This is one of those books that bounces around from place and person, seemingly every page, or even every paragraph. That can work for some subjects and writers, but I found it beyond frustrating. Just tell the damn story for gosh sakes. I finally gave up.

When we heard that Britain and Argentina were going to war over the Falklands, a central fact of the conflict hardly registered: the Falkland Islands are farther away from Britain than Hawaii is!Since the British fleet was elsewhere (a circumstance not lost on the Argentinian invaders), it would take an air assault to get British defenders back to these islands in time to do any good. This book is the thrilling tale of how a nearly-obsolete bomber (the Vulcan was already being delivered to air museums) was repurposed and mobilized to deliver Britain's response to Argentina - half-way around the world.

When I read the story of Vulcan 607 it brought back vivid memories of watching the Falklands War being played out on the television news. What this book provided was the intimate detail of the planning and execution of a hugely complex operation using outdated aviation and electronic technology. The successful bombing raid on Port Stanley was a remarkable achievement given the age of the technology being used. The coordination of the Victor refuelling armada was a major achievement in its own right and as important as the role played by Vulcan 607 and its crew. My only disappointment with the book was the writer's attempt to convey the innermost thoughts and mindset of the various crewmembers which at times seemed at odds with the factual nature of the story. Nevertheless it is a good account of the courage and determination of the RAF Vulcan and Victor crews.

A lovely edition of a well written book, autographed by the authors and participants in Operation Black Buck One. It's the behind the scenes story of operations the resulted in Vulcan XM607 bombing the runways at Port Stanley during Falkland's War. Unlike other books of its type, there was a full and gripping story to be told about the longest bombing mission of its day, so there is not a lot biographical fluff in these pages. It makes for a story that flows swiftly along chronologically. Interestingly enough, the operation turned out to be much more touch and go than I realized from other published sources. It makes for a good and quick read.
