Richard Barcellos has written a wonderful little book on the Covenant of Works. After responding to criticisms that the Covenant of Works is imposed on the text of Genesis 1-3 rather than found in the text, Barcellos presents to his readers seven arguments for affirming the Covenant of Works between God and Adam.Dr. Barcellos' ability to carefully articulate an argument makes this book helpful to anyone who wants to devote further study to the subject of the victory won by Christ, the Second Adam.

This is a solid overview of the Covenant of Works, first defending its inclusion in the 2LBCF, and then proving it from Scripture. This is a short and punchy introduction to this important Biblical concept. If you are new to the Covenant of Works, or want a short explainer to give to people, this is a great book.

This is a necessary volume. So many times as a Reformed Baptist I hear the attack that Baptists do not believe in covenant theology. in reality, we do. This short booklet on the covenant of works is written from a reformed baptist confession. There are plenty of references to the 2nd London Baptist Confession, but I particularly enjoyed it because of the Old Testament references (esp Hosea). So many times works on Covenant theology are restricted to Paul's writings (especially Romans) and Hebrews. If there are OT references, then it is the same ones over and over. Here there were some untapped resources used. I do wish it had gone a little further in depth, but at barely over a hundred pages, it would have made it an unbalanced part of the booklet trilogy.

This is a necessary volume in the series Recovering our Confessional Heritage. The treatment of the doctrine of the Covenant of Works by Dr. Richard Barcellos guides us to comprehend the garden with a worshipful view of the eschatology found therein. Demonstrating that the Covenant of Works is interwoven with the Covenant of Redemption, shedding light and meaning on the Adamic vocation that failed where the vocation of Christ Jesus is victorious. It will aid the reader to better understand the intentions of the Particular Baptist framers concerning the seventh chapter of the 2nd London Baptist Confession of Faith "Of God's Covenant". As well as clearly and concisely demonstrating the inner-biblical exegesis used as a framework for viewing the covenant of works in order to give us a more full understanding of the scopus scripturae. It demonstrates the hermeneutical methods used by the seventeenth century covenant theologians to derive their interpretive principles, and presents the theological implications that are found in the this chapter of the confession. Dr. Barcellos helps us to grasp the understanding of the necessity to view rightly the promise of the reward of life that Adam failed to attain via covenant, and its relation to the merited reward of life by the covenantal obedience by Jesus, the Last Adam.

Author Richard Barcellos has given us a small, informative primer, The Covenant of Works: Its Confessional and Scriptural Basis. You may already think you have a good theological understanding of the COW however Barcellos brings out numerous historical and theological aspects as they relate to the Second London Confession of Faith of 1689 and as the 2LCF relates to the Westminster Standards (Confession, Larger and Shorter Catechisms). The author reviews the history of the LCF with a definition of the COW - good stuff. And though I disagree with some of the content, there is valuable information that can be gleaned and used for further study. At only 137 pages, this could be read quickly and used to kick start a study of the subject. However, what I thought was going to be an interesting and informational book on the Covenant of Works turned out to be a difficult read. The book is chock full of parenthetical statements and references making the flow difficult and a time consuming read. Though well footnoted, numerous foot notes simply refer to the reader to the author's other books for fuller explanations. At times, as in chapter one, lesser known Latin theological terms are defined as a preface to what follows (well done), other terms are not defined and it leaves me wondering who the intended audience is. It appears to be written for the layperson but with the difficulties outlined above, I'm unsure if a good, introductory grasp of the COW can be obtained. A different, more helpful approach to the subject could have been taken. A larger, but yet still slim volume eliminating the issues outlined above would have made this a much better read.My main disagreement with this volume is that I don't believe the author has made a good case for the covenant coming after Adam's creation. I would hold to the view that Adam was created in covenant. With that statement being made, I'll leave it to the reader to decide.Perhaps, as the author states in his conclusion, this book can function as a launch pad for further study. I suggest this to be the case as I was left with more questions unanswered rather than answered. The author has provided a complimentary copy of this book. The views expressed are my own.

I truly enjoyed this book. Pastor Barcellos does a great job of encapsulating this wide and deep topic into bite sized pieces, without taking away from all its depth and history. My favorite part about the books is how Dr. Barcellos unpacks deep theology in tangible, terminology and explanation. Another highlight, and something I've come to enjoy and anticipate from Dr. Barcellos, is his explanation and demonstration of the Bible's own "Inner-Biblical Hermeneutic". With precision he walk's you through 4 critical and key Hermeneutical principles.1) The Holy Spirit is the only infallible interpreter of Holy Scripture.2) The Analogy Of Scripture (Analogia Scripture)3) The Anology Of Faith (Analogia Fidei)4)The Scope Of The Scriptures (Scopus Scripturae)For anyone who wants to get a grasp of the CoW from a Reformed Baptist perspective (2LBCF) and not be overwhelmed, this book is for you.
