Money Secrets of the Amish by Lorilee Cracker is a personal finance book written for the person who is looking to live in a more frugal or thrifty way.And who is more frugal or thrifty than the Amish?! Cracker interviews different Amish families and observes them in their homes and farms, going about their daily activities and asking them their views on spending and saving. The book is infused with a sense of humor and reads quickly and easily. I myself have noticed Amish families shopping at several of the thrift stores that I go to, and I was pleased to read about how this is a popular practice among most of the Amish- buying secondhand, that is.There are all sorts of tips in this book, and not just from the Amish but from the "English" as well. In addition to that, there are some good words of wisdom about living in overabundance that we can all gain something from.Disclaimer: I received a free copy of this book from Thomas Nelson in exchange for my honest review. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinion here is entirely my own.

I really enjoyed reading this book. I have read lots of books about frugality and this one is a nice to add to my keeper collection. There weren't a whole lot of NEW things in for the frugal person but it is an insight into how a whole frugal community lives. I really liked the reminder that it is different for the Amish because they aren't bombarded with all the commercialism that the rest of the world is.

I was relieved to find after reading this that there really are practical, do-able, and comfortable (and even fun) ways to minimize our consumerism using the anecdotal lessons in this book. The read was easy and i looked forward to each chapter for the next lesson. Of course, I purchased this book for that very purpose, to reduce my spending and better manage my budget in a way that was easy to implement and made sense. Stopping and taking stock of what is really important to have in my life (and space) has made me more thoughtful of how to live a more penny wise lifestyle without really doing "without". Thank you for this practical and amusing look into the Amish way of life. I purchased a paper copy rather than on Kindle so that I could highlight and make notations and flip from chapter to chapter for a re-read.

I just finished this book last night and was very impressed! From other bloggers I had heard some good reviews on this book, so I decided to buy it and see. I felt the book touched on some great points of money saving techniques. Most of what was mentioned I already do (yay for me! lol), but I did catch a few new tips that my husband and I can use in our money adventures. The book touches on avoiding debt, saving, growing your own produce, second-hand shopping, gift giving, and reusing things. One thing that didn't really impress me was the section on thrift shopping. I love to thrift shop, but the whole chapter seemed to be focused on finding "name brands." I actually could care less what brand I am wearing, or what my children are wearing. And I am not into the trends of the day either, so I found the tips not to be applicable to me. We do shop second-hand though, but I don't go to the store with the intention of buying name brands or what would be trendy for my kids. I decorate second hand too - and I almost never buy anything new anymore!I did like the section on farmer's markets and supporting local produce. This is something we are trying to do more of, and I would love to find an even more local farmer near us for meat and milk. So, except for the "worldly" points in it, I found it quite fun. I really liked her laid-back writing and her little jokes throughout. It was an easy read and fun to see another side of the Amish - especially with Amish Trivial Pursuit night!!I would recommend this book if you are looking for a few new tips on tightening down on money and saving more!

This books is filled with love filled fun ways to be thrifty , frugal and fun filled loving.ways the Amish make times with family meaningful! This book will be forever on my bookshelf with all the most valuable parys, sayings, quotes be told of the story forever used in my life! Sure I'll refer back to it often all my life! What an elegant awesome author!

I didn't know what quite to expect from this book. I was really surprised at all of the information it did have on different ways to save and a totally different way of thinking about money and credit cards. I think the most important thing I got from this book is that money can't make wonderful memories.

This book has given me a reality check. It's prompted me not only to spend less and save more but also to recognize that the best things in life are free. I'm ready for a total lifestyle makeover

No Amish secrets. None!Catchy title does not deliver any secrets. You could learn far more Amish culture for free on a single bicycle ride through Lancaster PA while stopping to talk with the farmers along the route (if you're not a jerk and can fit into another culture rather than expect the other culture to adapt to yours). You could extract all the Amish insight in this book and fit it on one or two pages.Usual modern book that expands 2 Amish pages into a book (slim Pickens on the Amish here). The rest is "Englander" filler which to me seemd to be slanted towards females.Usual budget savings ideas we all know already - Saving is good. Cash good. Credit bad. buy used. Use what you have. Not much Amish culture and Amish content and no Amish secrets. The Amish would tell you this is a bad value - skip this one for the Amish content you are searching for which is not delivered in this book.

I live in Lancaster, Pa Amish country and have a good understanding of the Amish, yet I found many parts of the book very refreshing & an enjoyable read. The book contains many truths about spending that, although many of us are familiar with due to perhaps our more frugal older relatives, we simple forget or ignore. Simple common sense frugality and thrift that unfortunately is not as common anymore.
