Exploration seems to be in the Norwegian genes. The Vikings, Roald Amundsen, Thor Heyerdal--Helge Ingstad comes from that mold. I first read his account of a 1940s winter spent with the inland Eskimos in my own neighborhood, interior Alaska, when I was in college. Here's a well written and engaging story of his life and that of his wife, who accompanied him and contributed her own perspective to much of what they accomplished. It's written by the Ingstads' daughter, who, of course, witnessed most of what she writes of but also had access to all her parents' papers and the relevant national and university archives. It's translated from Norwegian but reads so smoothly that you'll think it was written by a skilled native English speaker.
